i couldn't feel my face or my feet until noon.
and i was popping enough calciums to constipate a cow.
but my kids were begging me to make another batch of muffins with them.
i have a soft spot for baking with my kids.
(they're amazing egg crackers now - and flower measurers)
then they discovered my special stash of cupcake liners
and i almost had an annurism right there on the spot -
but they were beaming with so much happiness/giddiness at all the colors -
luke yelped when he dug out the striped ones.
i took deep breaths and reminded myself that their joy was more important
than saving the liners for the ever present babyshowers/bridal showers i end up throwing.
muffins were made and the kitchen was cleaned, for the moment.
so school needed to start
(after a rousing screening of Tangled)
and school found a new location this morning -
in charlie's room, everyone sprawled in the sunlight.
charlie is loving "explode the code" -
it's self-explanatory and lets a new reader feel self-directed.
i told them to do three sheets in their "code" workbooks -
and if you don't stop her - charlie will just keep going and going.
fractions are more fun when you're lounging.
though that was the only time luke sat up to do any of his work.
and somewhere in the mellow mix of it all,
our contractor, shane, showed up and reminded me that i needed to clean the downstairs rooms for inspection -
big homer simpson head slap and du-oh on my part!
triple sigh.
(this is it clean - it was a MESS before i tackled the rooms)
while subfloor and last minute projects went on upstairs -
i was relegated to the front of the house to listen for the inspector at the front door.
i was elbow deep in seed starting soil and a table full of milk-jug mini-greenhouses.
oh, well - tomorrow then.
since i was stuck up front for most of the day
(the inspector didn't make it until after three)
i decided to make a fruit salad for dinner (and all my snacks that day)
and then with more time to kill,
i figured it was time to wash, dry and pack up some lettuce in the fridge.
both of my babies had many a papercut and injury today.
here is charlie with her "broken little finger"
here is the cast and splint she concocted and showed me.
pink, of course.
and now - it's late and my eyes are heavy -
but there is a wild hare chasing me down.
and i have an idea that i need to get down on paper before i fall into a coma.
because after such a "restful" day -
i'm exhausted.
oh, and ps:
with the film coming out -
with the film coming out -
is anyone else reading the great gatsby again?
or for the first time?
so, there you have it -
my not so restful day in pictures.
i hope yours was more conducive to whatever it was you planned on doing.
i planned on resting -
and it failed me.
my bad.

Oh good, you're planning on watching Gatsby. The casting looks brilliant but I'm hesitant. Watch it and tell me if I'll love it or hate it. I love the book.
i'm just waiting to see the rating - since all movies are R at the moment - i hate rating trends...it's possibly the stupidest thing hollywood execs hinge success on - thanks a lot "the hangover"! we need a good "sixth sense" again - which is what turned around the last R rated run of movies and we had a good 7-8 years of PG-13 dominated films. okay, i'll stop blathering. (but seriously - going out of your way to throw in a few F-words to get your R rating from the board just to get more money - inane logic...you're actually cutting off a huge market share - sigh)
I read "The Great Gatsby" in high school and confess I promptly forgot it. I think I was still feeling the backlash of "Slaughterhouse Five", which I felt compelled to forget immediately because it was so horrifying. I wanted to love it, because I loved Vonnegut's short story "Harrison Bergeron" but no. No.
Thank goodness I got over my brain-bleach run-amok before we read "Hamlet" and "Pride and Prejudice."
So, now I have to read it again. And watch it.
And, apropos of nothing, we love Explode the Code, too! In fact, we love anything that makes schoolwork more self-directed and has silly pictures. Now if only there was a Calvin and Hobbes curriculum--for all subjects--I think my son would be finished with all his school work by recess every morning!
